These mats require a short break-in period based on the thin wax coating used to create their unique texture during manufacturing. The best way to remove this coating is to use the mat. After a few weeks of regular use, it will begin to give you excellent traction.
While these mats are machine washable their longest life will be achieved with hand washing with soapy water and hang drying.
I have been using Bheka Long Life mats for the last 20 years. Back when I first started practicing they only had them in light blue and they were the standard at Iyengar centers. As the years have gone on, I tried all the different types of mats that have hit the market but always come back to my Bheka. When I opened a yoga center in 2007, I did extensive research into how yoga mats are made because I wanted the center to be as green as possible. What I discovered was surprising: The eco mats on the market are not actually all that eco. While they start with rubber instead of PVC, the process that takes that raw material to a final product remains hidden as a trade secret. They undergo a chemical process that we are not privy too. But Bheka mats are made under the Okeo-Tex standard. Which means that the manufacturing process is completely transparent and monitored throughout. I can say that, without a doubt, Bheka mats are the most durable. I have had the same set that I opened the center with eight years ago. If I had used any other mat then they would have needed to be replaced by now. Not only do they last, but they function better than other mats that can easily get slick when folks sweat. In a word: Bheka is the best. And that they can only be found on Yoga Lifestyle is a plus. I am always looking to support independent yoga businesses instead of the big box outlets. Having a personal relationship to the companies that I do business with is something I really value. With Yoga Lifestyle and Bheka, I feel like its not just business, but yoga.

I opened my studio in December 2001 with the Bheka Standard Long Life as my studio mat. Recently when placing another mat order with Ray of Yoga Life Style our conversation because of circumstance, led us to marvel at the rather short lifespan of our modern technology, phones specifically. I reminded Ray that the reason he has not heard from me in 14 years was because his mats are only just now needing to be replaced. They have lasted 14 years! I cannot recall the last time I had anything for that length of time before replacing – oh yes, the house I live in!
